A reactive dog is one that responds to specific triggers, other dogs, strangers, bikes, livestock, more strongly than the situation requires. Reactivity is usually rooted in fear, frustration, or over-arousal. It is not the same as aggression, although a small minority of reactive dogs do escalate to aggression if poorly managed.
Common triggers
- Other dogs (the most common, particularly on lead)
- Strangers, especially men, hi-vis jackets, hats, beards
- Bikes, joggers, scooters
- Fast-moving cars
- Other animals: squirrels, cats, livestock
Frustration vs fear
Two main flavours, and the fix is different for each:
Frustration reactivity — the dog wants to greet but can't (typically on lead). Body forward, fast tail, calms quickly when trigger leaves. Off-lead they're often fine with the same trigger.
Fear reactivity — the dog wants the trigger to go away. Body weight back, hard stare, slow to settle. Reactivity is consistent on and off lead.
Most leashed-explosion-then-calm dogs are frustration reactive. The "scary" lunge is misleading.
What helps
- Distance from triggers in early stages
- A force-free trainer or behaviourist (look for IMDT, ABTC, or PPG)
- A weekly secure private field session for decompression
- More mental exercise, not more miles
- Patience — most cases improve over months, not weeks
What doesn't help
- "Showing them who's boss" / dominance theory (discredited)
- Aversive tools (prong collars, e-collars)
- Forcing socialisation
- Long lead-walks at busy times

Is my reactive dog aggressive? Almost certainly not. Reactivity is usually rooted in frustration or fear, not predatory or territorial aggression. Don't assume the worst.
Will my reactive dog ever be 'normal'? Most reactive dogs improve significantly with the right approach. Some reach the point of relaxed walks; some don't, and learn to manage with quieter routes. Both are valid outcomes.
Should I get another dog to socialise my reactive dog? Almost never a good idea while reactivity is active. Address the existing dog's issues first.
